Newborn hearing screening for families in Sandton and the surrounding northern suburbs is conducted at nearby Linkwood Clinic rather than at the Sandhurst rooms. Screening uses Oto-Acoustic Emissions (OAE) and, where a fuller picture is needed, Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing. Both are painless, take place while your baby sleeps, and are usually finished within about twenty minutes. Early screening matters: hearing loss identified in the first months of life gives a child a materially better language outcome than a diagnosis made at eighteen months.
